How long does Invisalign take? For most people, somewhere between about 6 and 18 months. Minor corrections can take a few months, while more involved crowding or bite correction can take 18 months or longer, and timeframes vary between people.

The two biggest factors are how far your teeth need to move and how consistently you wear your aligners.

Typical Invisalign timeframes

Every case is planned individually, but rough ranges look like this:

These are general ranges only. Your dentist will estimate your timeline from your scan, and that estimate may change if teeth move faster or slower than planned.

The treatment option you need also reflects how long it takes. Our article on Invisalign Lite vs Comprehensive explains how aligner numbers relate to case complexity. For the full overview, see our Invisalign in North Sydney guide.

Teenagers and adults can both have successful treatment. Teenagers sometimes have the advantage of growth, while adults are often more consistent with wear time, which can balance things out.

How aligner changes add up

Invisalign treatment is a sequence of aligners. Each set moves teeth a small amount, and you usually change to the next set every one to two weeks, as your dentist directs.

So the number of aligners in your plan gives a rough idea of treatment length. For example, 14 aligners changed every two weeks is about 28 weeks, before any refinements.

Some people are moved to a shorter change interval if teeth are tracking well. This is a clinical decision, and you should not change aligners faster than advised, as teeth may not keep up.

Refinements

Near the end of treatment, many people need refinements. A new scan is taken and extra aligners are made to fine-tune teeth that have not fully reached their planned position. Refinements can add several weeks to a few months.

Some cases also use elastics, small rubber bands attached to the aligners, to help correct the bite. Wearing these as directed is just as important as wearing the aligners, and skipping them can lengthen treatment.

What can make treatment take longer

Several things can extend your timeline:

Bone in adults can also respond a little more slowly than in teenagers, although many adults complete treatment within the expected range.

Health and habits

Some general health factors can influence how teeth respond, including gum disease and certain medications. Tell your dentist about your medical history so they can plan realistically.

Habits such as grinding or clenching can also affect aligners. Your dentist may check for wear on the aligners at review appointments.

What you can do to stay on track

The part you control most is wear time. A few habits help:

  1. Put aligners back in straight after eating and cleaning your teeth.
  2. Keep a case with you so aligners are not wrapped in a napkin and thrown away.
  3. Keep your previous set as a backup.
  4. Use a reminder on your phone after meals if you tend to forget.
  5. Attend review appointments, usually every 6–10 weeks.

If you notice an aligner is not sitting fully on your teeth, mention it at your next visit or call us sooner. Small fit problems are easier to address early.

Clean your aligners each morning and evening with a soft brush and cool water. Clean, well-fitting aligners are more comfortable to wear, which makes it easier to keep up the hours.

Risks and limitations to keep in mind

A longer or shorter timeline is not a sign of a better or worse result. What matters is that teeth move safely to a stable position.

Moving teeth too quickly can increase the risk of root shortening and gum problems, which is why aligner intervals are set carefully. Teeth often feel tender for a day or two after each change, and a mild lisp is common at first.

Results vary between people, and some cases need more refinement than expected. If aligners are not the right tool for your case, braces may be suggested, and complex bite cases may be referred to an orthodontic practice. You can compare options in Invisalign vs braces for adults.

Your dentist will explain the expected timeline for your case and update you at each review. If the estimate changes, ask why, so you understand what is happening with your teeth.

After active treatment ends

When your last aligner is finished, treatment is not quite over. Retainers are needed to hold teeth in place while the surrounding bone and gums settle, and long term to reduce drifting.

Read wearing retainers after Invisalign for what to expect. Treatment length also affects cost, which we explain on our Invisalign cost page. Prices are a guide; your exact fee is confirmed in a written treatment plan after your assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can Invisalign be done in 6 months?

Some mild cases can be completed in around 6 months, but many take longer. Your dentist will estimate your timeline from your scan, and timeframes vary between people.

Does wearing aligners longer each day speed things up?

Wearing aligners 20 to 22 hours a day keeps treatment on schedule, but wearing them more does not make teeth move faster than planned. Change aligners only as your dentist advises.

How often will I need check-ups?

Review appointments are usually every 6 to 10 weeks. Your dentist may see you more often if teeth are not tracking as planned.

Do refinements add much time?

Refinements can add several weeks to a few months, depending on how many extra aligners are needed. Many people need at least one round.
